These forms of visualisation - beyond conventional notation - create possibilities for alternative communication of ideas and images of creative processes that often, but not always, result in a real music composition. Between the various visual elements used to capture these very first ideas and the actual sound material, a field of tension emerges whose contingent energy tells of the disparate and sometimes contradictory ways in which concepts can be materialised. Not everything that was an idea passes into the aggregate state of sound; some things remain in the visible and follow the laws of visual evidence. Formally and technically, the works of the 17 international composers are images of heterogeneous individual approaches; it is these very own detours, bridges and mental fire accelerators that allow us to look into the complex process of composing. Texts, diagrams, watercolours, ink, freely oscillating and precisely circled lines: the formal language of musical thought is as varied as the sound world that emerges from it. Image: Sketch by Lucía Hinojosa Gaxiola, 2021 Idee und Konzept Idea and concept Die Ausstellung / the exhibition "A BLINK FROM SONIC EYES, Drawings from the fleeting archive of towards sound" markiert Teil 1 des zweiteiligen Ausstellungszyklus / marks part 1 of the exhibition cycle "HUMAN-MACHINE-WORLD, Art for the Anthropocene" Concept exhibition frame: Madeleine Schwinge for re:future Lab. de Das Zeitalter des Anthropozäns ist angebrochen. Der erste Ausstellungsteil "A BLINK FROM SONIC EYES, Drawings from The Fleeting Archive of Towards Sound" präsentiert intime Skizzen von 17 internationalen Musikern. The age of the Anthropocene has dawned. Crises alternate at an ever faster pace, systems accelerate, the human distance from themselves and in their distance from the world they destroy it. In an accelerated, cybernetic world, the enhanced and reified Human is desperately driven into a frenzied race for what remains of Mother Earth. As early as the mid-20th century, Horkheimer and Adorno warned of the failure of the Enlightenment, the instrumentalization of reason for despotic purposes, the reification of the individual while glorifying the power of domination over Nature. And as Professor Emerita in History of Consciousness Donna Haraway noted sixty years later, the power of the ideas to think other ideas is enormous - this is especially true of the process of composing ephemeral ideas for a new world worth living in, of bringing complex processes and multiperspectivity into tangible and intelligible patterns. Are we still allowed to believe in Human Development? How do we want to define a life worth living? What do we need to master the challenges ahead of us individually and collectively? How do we navigate fundamental change? In the 20’s of the 21st century, it is high time to take in serious even the slightest signs of resilience trends to counter the gloomy forecasts and envisage positive speculative futures. This is where the re:future Lab sets in: It explores shifts in ethics and morality, changes in thinking and behaviour, and new models and results of transdisciplinary research that are emerging in the various areas of mutation in our societies. Through exhibitions and a wide program of talks, conferences, publications, lectures, and workshops, it provides a platform for questioning, presentation, discourse, and knowledge transfer on the pressing issues of our time. The exhibition cycle in two-part "HUMAN-MACHINE-World, Art for the Anthropocene" takes up two fundamental pillars that have become determinant for the interwoven history between Human and Earth in the modern times - the humanistic and technological idea of progress. The first part of the cycle, "A BLINK FROM SONIC EYES, Drawings from The Fleeting Archive of TOWARDS SOUND” (8. Oct - 30 Oct., 2021), presents intimate sketches by 17 international musicians. It deals with capturing fleeting ideas by means of a free formal language, and at the same time with composition as a translation of complex processes into a system visible to others. Music and drawing, both media of profoundly human expression, might invite to imagine new things, develop hypotheses, coming together in a boundless orchestra of ideas. The second part of the cycle, „THE WHOLE EARTH 2045, Memories and Bodies from a Future“ (5. Nov - 11. Dec, 2021) is built on some primal ideas: the prediction of Futurist and Head of technical development at Google, Ray Kurzweil, that 2045 marks the tipping point at which artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence (Singularity), and the US counterculture magazine by Steven Brand’s, 'The Whole Earth Catalog', that Steve Jobs saw as one of the bibles of his generation and as an analog precursor of Google-like search engines, from which he liked to quote the injunction "Stay hungry, stay foolish". The three artists shown in the exhibition address in their personal way these crucial issues, the future of human labor and the physical and psychological consequences of data-driven productivity (Parsons & Charlesworth), human dreams depicted and interpreted by artificial intelligence (Grégory Chatonsky), and trans-corporal experiences in a data surveillance society (Johanna Bruckner). The venue The re:future Lab art space is an open platform for future-themed contemporary art and transdisciplinary discourse on speculative futures. Its mission is to put forward cutting-edge artists and future advocates who address the urgent upheavals on the edge of our time. The aim is to foster new positive narratives for social and cultural shifts. Its activitiestake the form of art exhibitions, talks, lectures, panels, conferences, art mediation, editions, publications and special events. The re:future Lab institute that is affiliated to the art space offers an incubator program for knowledge transfer. Mentoring sessions, lectures and workshop modules help to navigate better towards unknown territories, to handle complexity and to find new sense and meaning for desirable lifes. Future is open - Navigation comes next. The re:future Lab was founded in 2020 by conceptual artist, curator, researcher and facilitator Madeleine Schwinge.
